In the old house of ballabagh,
The spirits did reside,
Until a strange revelation,
Put all the fright aside,
The people living near the
house, Were oft subject to hear,
Howls and cries from the house,
Which made them tremble with
fear, In the quiet of the night,
The howls would ring clear,
To convince even the stoutest
hearts, That a phantom dwelt here.
The word spread quickly,
And soon fact became fiction,
Each retelling added to it,
A totally new dimension,
Until it reached a rational
man, Who arrived to investigate
the situation, Knowing that there had to
be, A more logical explanation,
“I will see the phantom
for myself, By spending the night in there”
Amidst protests, fury and
better advice, He steadfastly did declare,
Next morning the people gathered
round, To see if the man had survived,
And their mouths fell open,
When they saw him come out
alive, “what happened! What happened!
What was it that you did see?”
In disbelief, wonder and relief,
They all cried unanimously,
“if only” said the man,
sourly, “had all of you a scientific
temper, Then you would know immediately,
That your phantom was a dog
suffering from distemper!”
